Despite the Drizzle, Tribeca Fair Shines

The Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair featured fun, films and games for all
The Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair featured fun, films and games for all

Though the cloudy skies and persistent rain put a damper on the weekend weather, hundreds still turned out for the Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair on Saturday, April 30. From countless games and tasty treats to an array of ongoing performances and storytelling, the transformation of Greenwich Street into a fun-filled, 12-block long fest riveted children and adults alike.

Throughout the day, the streets were filled with puppeteers, stilt walkers, jugglers, and storytellers.
Dozens of neighborhood restaurants, like Bubby's and BREAD, offered an extravaganza of edible delights, and downtown merchants, schools, and other organizations from the Lower Manhattan community also participated. Local youth dance groups and singers, as well as more than 50 professional artists, performed on multiple festival stages.

The fair featured plenty of activities, including chess games on a life-sized board

For participants, there were plenty of activities to choose from: arts and crafts, games, art shows, face painting, sand sculpting, chess games on a life-sized board, and dress up (booths stocked with costumes let kids play the role of vintage movie directors and create personalized movie posters). Popular kids' television characters -- Clifford the Big Red Dog and Kids Go! stars Maya and Miguel -- made appearances, and several authors gave readings.

There also were film screenings, including The Muppets Wizard of Oz, a contemporary version of the movie classic starring Ashanti and Kermit the Frog, and Five Children and It, a fairy tale in which actor Kenneth Brannagh and his nieces and nephews discover an ancient, magical monster.

The family festival was part of an impressive activity lineup for the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival (which ran from April 19 through May 1). While the fourth annual film festival exhilarated Lower Manhattan with its sprawling showcase of serious adult art films, this event ensured that the caravans of kids were not forgotten.
