Chambers Street reconstruction is to continue through early 2014
|
This week, stakeholders heard the latest Chambers Street Capital Reconstruction updates from the city Department of Design and Construction. City officials and project managers explained that extensive infrastructure work along the cross-town thoroughfare was delayed by Hurricane Sandy, as well as by major Con Edison gas-main and duct replacement on each of the segments that are now excavated.

Overall, the Chambers Street infrastructure project completion will be pushed back to early 2014, from its original summer 2013 completion -- approximately six months later than originally estimated.
Another significant reason for the delay is the capital reconstruction work in the large intersection of Chambers and Church Streets. There, crews must work in quadrants in order to maintain traffic. That intersection is expected to be the last part of the project to be completed; meanwhile, actual street segments are expected to be complete by the end of 2013. The Greenwich to West Broadway section will be the next block completed, in late spring 2013.
Those who attended the meeting at the Lower Manhattan Construction Command Center requested more regular Chambers Street project-update meetings. DDC officials agreed, and also committed to improve pedestrian crossings with better visibility through the fencing, as well as clearer signage, and rodent control.
The Chambers Street project began in summer 2010, with contractor Judlau Construction charged with replacing the street's 150-year-old water main, and repairing or coordinating upgrades of other underground utilities and ducts.
