Chambers Street reconstruction is to continue through late 2014
|
Rebuilding the infrastructure on Chambers Street has made steady progress, though city crews have been challenged to address major interferences between the many utility lines in the roadbed. In a recent community update at the LMCCC, Department of Design and Construction project managers reported that the overall project duration has been extended approximately one year, to late 2014.
The additional duration allows time for crews to extend their work into the Chambers and Church Street intersection, where extensive utility repairs, replacements, and relocations are needed. That work will take place in quadrants, each one requiring approximately six months time to complete, beginning this spring. However, to help expedite overall the rebuilding schedule, crews will begin work concurrently on Chambers between Church and Broadway. Total duration for that block will be from approximately late June 2012, through late 2014.

Work also continues in the intersection of Chambers and West Broadway. Crews there are rebuilding two manholes that were extremely deteriorated, and wrapping up major utility reconstruction through fall 2012. Water-main replacement in this area will help avert future emergency repairs, like the water-main breaks that occurred elsewhere in Tribeca in recent years.
Currently, crews also are working on the two blocks of Chambers between Greenwich and Church Street. They are both expected to be complete in fall 2012.
Traffic patterns will shift as necessary while Chambers Street infrastructure and pavement are rebuilt. Additionally, when Church-to-Broadway work begins, that block of Chambers will be made one-way westbound; both Warren and Duane Streets will serve as additional eastbound detour routes.
By the time the project is complete in late 2014, Chambers Streets aging water mains, sewer, electric, gas, steam, and telecommunications lines will be fully upgraded. The roadway will be rebuilt and repaved, as will the curbs and sidewalks. New traffic signs and street lighting will be installed, and five new trees will be planted.
