Chambers Street reconstruction is to continue through late 2014
|
Replacement of the century-old water main on Chambers Street is extending to Broadway starting approximately Saturday, June 23rd. To accommodate the work zone, Chambers Street will be one-way westbound from Broadway to Greenwich Street. The traffic change is necessary for city Department of Design and Construction crews to excavate each half of the block and install the new water main, as well as replace other utilities and restore the roadway.
During the project, the M22 eastbound bus will be relocated to Warren Street, with a stop near the corner of Broadway. The eastbound M22 has been detoured along Warren Street from West to Church Street since the project began in 2010.
Crews also continue to work on the two blocks of Chambers Street between Greenwich and Church, including the intersections.
Westbound traffic will be maintained via a single lane on Chambers west of Broadway, though crews will be working on different sides of the roadway as needed. All changes are in coordination with the city Department of Transportation.
Eastbound motorists between Greenwich Street and Broadway are advised to use Warren or Worth Streets.
Traffic enforcement agents and signs will help redirect traffic in the area. Pedestrian and building access will be maintained at all times, and designated loading zones and garbage pick up will be coordinated through temporary signs and DDC outreach to local residents and businesses.
Each segment of infrastructure work on Chambers Street is progressing steadily, with crews replacing utilities, and restoring the roadway, curbs and sidewalks upon completion. The schedule is currently planned as:
- Greenwich to West Broadway - complete fall 2012
- West Broadway to Church Street - complete fall 2012
- Church Street to Broadway - complete fall 2014
More details are included in the DDC full Chambers Street Reconstruction presentation from May 2012, viewable as a PDF here.
The Chambers and Church Street intersection requires additional time to replace and relocate extensive utility ducts, with crews working in quadrants there through approximately late 2014. Traffic on Church Street will be maintained at all times.
