Job Schedulers coordinate subcontractors and the delivery of materials
|
The second class of the Job Scheduler Training class at the Borough of Manhattan Community College graduated on October 15, 2007. 17 men and women spent the last few months focused on learning the skills needed to become Job Schedulers which coordinate the work of subcontractors and the delivery of materials so the construction plan is met.
The program was established by the Lower Manhattan Construction Command Center to encourage minority, female, and veteran participation in the construction sector and rebuilding effort downtown.
At the graduation ceremony, Dean Sunil Gupta told the students, "As you move on, I commend your dedication to stick with the program. Congratulations."
Bob Harvey, Acting Executive Director of the Lower Manhattan Construction Command center also spoke to the students. "This is a very exciting time in Lower Manhattan. The amount of construction is unprecedented in its magnitude and this work will generate lots of opportunities for you. We look forward to hearing your success stories."
Lou Colletti, President of the Building Trades Employers Association told the graduates, "I thank the Mayor and the Governor for taking a chance on this program. It's the first time we as an industry tired to do something to find people to fill our jobs. The graduates have worked very hard and on behalf of our contractors, we want to help you further your career."
Representing Governor Eliot Spitzer, Zeidah Ferguson Giovanni said, "The Governor understands it's more than studying. This is also a symbol that you will continue to give back to your community and your families. You will have a role in shaping Lower Manhattan. The Governor is aware of all your hard work and is very proud of you."
BMCC Professor Andrew Boyarsky, who presented the graduates with their certificates, also praised their achievements. "This second class has really raised the bar," he said. "It's amazing the level of commitment and the progress you've made. It honors me that you're going out into the world to help rebuild Lower Manhattan."
The Job Scheduler Training Program will be offered twice a year at BMCC for individuals interested in advancing in the construction industry. Starting in November, BMCC also will offer the Job Scheduler class as part of the curriculum in its own Continuing Education Program.
