56 Leonard, located at the corner of Church Street, construction resumed in fall 2012
|
Foundation work is resuming at 56 Leonard Street, located at the southwest corner of Church Street in Tribeca. Construction at the site initially began several years ago, but was put on hold in 2010. Developer Alexico Group has since replaced the contractor with Lend Lease U.S. Construction Co., and is now restarting erection of the same 57-story tower that was originally unveiled in 2008.
Crews are now performing utility vault construction along Leonard Street between Church and West Broadway. Additional foundation work will follow inside the site through the end of the year, with some utility tie-ins on the Church Street side. Superstructure construction will follow in early 2013 for approximately 18 months, through mid-2014 -- that schedule accounts for the innovative design of the skyscraper, including its cantilevered apartments and balconies. Full completion is expected in spring 2016.
The building was designed by the Swiss architectural firm Herzog and de Meuron, and features 145 luxury condominium apartments ranging from two to five bedrooms, as well as 10 penthouses on the uppermost floors. Once completed it will be the tallest residential tower in Tribeca and one of the tallest in all of Lower Manhattan.
