2-3 Chambers elevator installation
Beginning in early 2007, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is working to make the 2/3 Chambers Street subway station ADA compliant. The project involves installation of three elevators at the station. The first will be installed on the west side of Hudson Street at Chambers Street, where a kiosk will house the new elevator. It will carry riders from street level to the non-paid mezzanine area of the station.

Two more elevators also will be installed in the station, between the paid mezzanine area and the uptown and downtown train platforms.

Construction is taking place within the barricaded areas around the station and is expected to wrap up in November 2008.

Summary

Hudson Street closure: In March 2008, Hudson Street was closed between Chambers and Reade Streets for street-to-mezzanine elevator installation and utility work. It is expected to reopen in late October 2008.

Chambers Street night closures: Starting September 29, 2008, Chambers Street between Greenwich and West Broadway will be closed to eastbound traffic from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. seven days a week. Vehicles will be diverted to Warren Street during those hours, when New York City Transit crews will relocate a water main on the southeast corner of Chambers and West Broadway. The relocation makes way for the new elevator that will connect the mezzanine to the southbound subway platform.

Crews will not perform noisy work after 11 p.m., and will plate the work zone to accommodate normal daytime traffic flow. Westbound traffic on Chambers Street will not be affected, nor will pedestrian access. The work is expected to continue for approximately four weeks, through late October 2008.
