After several months of careful coordination with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), preparations for the 130 Cedar Street building conversion began in summer 2007.
Decontamination of the former office building concluded in early June 2008. Deconstruction down to the building's steel beams and reinforced-concrete frame wrapped up in summer 2008. Construction is active through early 2010, with contractor Laval Construction having added seven new stories to the existing 12 (including a penthouse floor). The new, 19-story tower will house a new hotel with retail and restaurants.
The cleaning and partial deconstruction concluded in summer 2008. The contractor added seven stories to the existing structure -- now up to 19 stories -- and the building is slated for early 2010 completion. A partial opening is expected in fall 2009.
During the cleaning and partial deconstruction of 130 Cedar Street, eight air monitors will be stationed around the upper and at-grade perimeter of the building. Similar to the 130 Liberty Street deconstruction, the existing building will remain enclosed by netting, and work will be carried out under negative air pressure within the structure to contain all particulates.
