Construction to convert the former headquarters of Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft into a residential building began in March 2005, shortly after the law firm relocated to One World Financial Center. In spring 2005, the building, located at 100 Maiden Lane, was purchased by developer Frank Lalezarian for $57 million. The conversion project was expected to cost $110 million, financed with $98 million in Liberty Bonds. Tenants began to move in, and the 25-story building was completed by June 2006.
The rental building has 340 apartments, including studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom units. Many residences offer terraces and home offices. The building also features a fitness center, sundeck, concierge, and on-site garage. The centerpiece of 100 Maiden Lane is its 100-foot high atrium, which is topped by a glass skylight. In addition, the existing ground floor was extended to provide retail space totaling 15,000 square feet.
The building’s original façade was preserved. In addition, converting the former office building into residential space required 6,500 square feet of new construction, which included increasing the retail space on the ground floor.
