Work by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to construct the Fulton Street Transit Center has required lane closures on Maiden Lane from Broadway to Nassau Street. The closure allows crews to access underground utilities. But even amidst the construction, Maiden Lane establishments still remain active. Below are a description of some of the great shops and eateries located on that block.

Café Health Exchange

From smoothies and wraps to hearty soups and custom salads, Café Health Exchange has something for everyone. This eatery has been feeding downtown's breakfast and lunch crowd since 1982. Popular menu choices include chicken stew, vegetarian paninis, and the daily fish special. Eat in or take advantage of free delivery. Café Health Exchange also offers expert catering for any event up to 1,000 people off premises and up to 60 people on premises.

Mardi Gras Pizza

Mardi Gras creates pizzas with a kick. The secret is in the sauce, which is light and tangy, and the crispy crust dusted with cornmeal. Mardi Gras offers special concoctions -- mixing ingredients like goat cheese, shrimp, and red peppers. This pizza joint's signature dish features shrimp, crawfish, and andouille sausage for a spicy Cajun taste. The menu also includes calzones, pasta, salads, and sandwiches served on homemade focaccia. Owner Mouhamad Shami is committed to providing his loyal customers with fresh, tasty food. Alfanoose's offerings have won raves from New York Magazine, Gourmet, and the Daily News.

This gourmet deli has been serving the downtown community since 1993. Maiden Heaven offers an array of choices, including deli and customary sandwiches, paninis, wraps, burgers, smoothies, soup, and an extensive salad bar. Customers receive a free Poland Spring water with a minimum purchase at the salad bar or a free soda with a wrap or panini.

Guardian Lock Security Center relocated to Maiden Lane in 2002. Guardian is a full-service locksmith. With a history of serving the commercial community, they also welcome new residential customers with an introductory 10 percent discount on service work.

Maiden Lane Wine & Liquor has been an institution in the Financial District for the past 60 years. Current owner Peter Muscat has been running this discount wine and liquor shop for 35 years. Here, the shelves are stocked with a wide range of international and domestic wines, from fine vintages to bargain bottles. For those who can't make it to the store, Maiden Lane Wine & Liquor offers free delivery.

Greenwich Village than lower Broadway. Owner Pam Chmiel, a former film editor, opened this Financial District gem three years ago. In addition to a warm, informal atmosphere, Klatch offers delectable gourmet pastries, doughnuts, and natural low-fat muffins from New York's top independent bakeries. The shop serves the freshest coffee from New York's famous roaster, Porto Rico, as well as a variety of tea and specialty drinks, like sipping chocolate. Stop in for a light lunch of soup and quiche or unwind after work with a beer or glass of wine. Klatch hosts a weekly knitting class on alternate Thursdays, and the art displayed on the wall is for sale.
