Buon' Amici serves up great tasting southern Italian cuisine
|
Earlier this year, the Communiello family -- Patricia and Michael, and their sons Robert and Michael -- embarked on a new venture when they opened Buon' Amici, an Italian restaurant at the South Street Seaport. Though none of them had experience running a restaurant, they had been dreaming about it for awhile.
"It was an idea that we threw around for some time, and then this opportunity came up," says Robert, who at 27 years old needed no convincing to leave his job working in mutual funds to start up a family business.
While searching for a space to call their own, the Communiellos learned of a family friend who had operated a restaurant at 40 Peck Slip and was giving it up. They immediately knew they had found their spot. After a renovation to give the place a homey atmosphere, Buon' Amici opened on March 1. Its name, meaning "good friends," encapsulates the feel that the Communiellos wanted -- a restaurant where good friends dine.

| Buon' Amici's menu includes fresh mozzarella with tomato and basil drizzled with balsamic vinegar |
Buon' Amici serves up great tasting southern Italian cuisine, with many of the dishes created from Patricia's original recipes. The menu offerings range from antipasti dishes, like fried calamari and fresh mozzarella with tomato and basil drizzled with balsamic vinegar, to hearty entrees, like home style meatballs in fresh tomato sauce over spaghetti and veal scaloppini in a white wine, shallot, and caper butter sauce. For fish lovers, Buon' Amici serves up fresh salmon and sole purchased at the Fulton Fish Market. And for those in the area who would rather eat at home, Buon' Amici will deliver.
Though Buon' Amici is a new addition to Lower Manhattan, the Communiellos are not. Patricia and Michael are Little Italy natives and live in Southbridge Towers, located in the seaport area.
